Health Walks

East Kent Health Walks

WalkingHundreds of people are now walking as a regular form of exercise following a number of healthwalks being set up across east Kent. East Kent Heathwalks are part of the Walking the way to Heath Initiative which aims to get more people walking in their own communities, especially those who take little exercise or live in areas of poor health.

Described by health experts as ‘almost perfect exercise’, walking requires no equipment or expense and is the ideal way for most people to become more active. Walking one mile virtually burns the same amount of calories as running one mile!

What is a HealthWalk?

HealthWalks are free, short, volunteer led, local walks aimed at those who wish to be more active. Walks are generally between 40-90 minutes and leave from accessible venues such as libraries and leisure centres. No need to book, just turn up for a free HealthWalk. Most of the HealthWalks finish with refreshments and a chat.

All these HealthWalks are led by trained volunteers. In order to have as many HealthWalks in East Kent as possible for you to join, we need to have friendly, reliable volunteers from the community to help assist on and lead the walks.

Would you like to be a volunteer?

In order to have as many Health Walks in East Kent as possible for you to join, we need friendly, reliable volunteers from the community to help assist and lead the walks. The initial commitment is only 6-8 weeks for about an hour a week. Full support is provided including training delivered by the scheme co-ordinators.

If you are interested in a free volunteer training day including lunch (with no commitment to lead straightaway) then get in touch with the co-ordinator on 0800 849 4000 or e-mail healthwalks@nhs.net.
