Canterbury and District Sports Awards 2009
In its second year, the Canterbury and District Sports Awards are the biggest event of its kind in the Canterbury area, recognising and celebrating the wealth of talent and commitment seen in community sport across the district. From athletes and coaches to officials and administrators, the awards are the only event in the Canterbury area to recognise achievements across all sports.
The evening, which was hosted by South East Today newsreader Rob Smith, began with a special demonstration by world freestyle football champion John Farnworth. After all the awards had been handed out, disabled sailor Hilary Lister, who has her own link to the Canterbury district in that she learnt to sail at Westbere Sailing Opportunities, spoke about her experiences and took part in a question and answer session with Rob Smith.
Canterbury City Council's Executive member for sport and culture, Cllr Darren Ellis, said " It was a fantastic evening and a wonderful opportunity opportunity to celebrate the very best sports men, women and clubs in the Canterbury district.
