Last staged in 2006, this race is in memory of Les Golding (resident of Beltinge, Herne Bay) who was a vibrant member of IEK for many years and was awarded the OBE for his tireless work in athletics for young people.
Les was the driving force behiind the National grading scheme which enables comparison of standard in different disciplines – for example 1.55 for an u15 male high jumper is moderate standard who might make a county final and is thus graded level 4 (the basic level) while 1.55 for an u15 800m male runner is a likely National medallist and is therefore Level 1, which is the highest National Standard.
Until his death aged 84, Les was a regular at all National events, travelling in our young athletes’ minibus, all the while recounting exploits of his time as one of the British Olympic Team Managers in the 1960s. On arrival he would then introduce novice young IEK to national and international heros, who all knew Les personally
To stage the 2012 revival of this race, the Club has engaged the services of Nice Work for the admin and our own IEK Chip Timing
